Classical technique, any music you like

There’s an old and unhelpful idea that classical training and singing pop music are opposites. They aren’t. Classical technique is simply the study of how the voice works — breath, support, resonance, placement — and it’s the reason some singers are still going strong at sixty while others are hoarse by thirty.

So we build that foundation. And then we apply it to whatever you actually want to sing.

You bring the songs. Pop, musical theatre, jazz, folk, rock, whatever’s on repeat in your car. We work on them properly, and the technique goes in underneath where you can feel it doing the work.

“Her classical training ensures that you get training in safe and correct voice control which you can then adapt to any style.”

Never had a lesson before?

That’s the most common way to start.

Some students arrive having never sung in front of another person since primary school. Some were told once, by a teacher who should have known better, that they weren’t a singer. A few can’t get through the first lesson without apologising.

None of that is a problem. Lessons are one-to-one — there’s no group listening, nothing being compared, and you will never be made to perform for anyone. The first lesson is quiet, unhurried, and mostly about working out what your voice already does.

“As a newbie singer who was a little anxious and confused about where to start… I found Phoebe to be so warm and encouraging, she immediately put me at ease.”

What we work on

  • Breath and support — where the sound actually comes from, and why “sing from your diaphragm” is unhelpful advice on its own.
  • Range — extending it safely at both ends, and navigating the awkward middle where most voices want to break.
  • Tone and resonance — the difference between a voice that carries and one that disappears, and how to shape the sound you want.
  • Vocal health — how to warm up, how to sing for two hours without wrecking yourself, and what to do when you’re sick or tired.
  • Repertoire — choosing music that suits your voice now, while building towards the music you want to sing eventually.
  • Musicianship — reading, pitching, rhythm, harmony. As much or as little as is useful to you.
  • Performance — for students who want it: stagecraft, microphone technique, nerves, and the mechanics of holding an audience.
